Can the hair loss during surgery be recovered?

I recently had a small part of a flap corner removed (to create a slight widows peak, i.e. more natural than the flat front from the original flap. Approximately 2 weeks after my surgery, I noticed that my hair behind the removed area was gone. I have a small area behind the 'removed' area that is devoid of any hair. In addition, it's extremely shiny. I contacted my Dr. and he assured me that I was experiencing some telagon (sp) loss and it would grow back. Is this likely?

Hi mate,

There are a multitude of complications that are possible, I will focus on the more relevant ones that patients should be aware of:

  1. In many surgical procedure, bleeding and infection are possible with surgical hair regain surgery.
  2. Donor site scarring can be minimal or excessive. Some people have internal factors that cause them to develop a small scar, while others have a genetic factor that causes propensity to scar.
  3. Scalp numbness occurs when the superficial sensory nerve branches of the scalp are transected during harvesting of the donor strip. The numbness is usually transient and returns in a few months after surgery.
  4. In the recipient site where the hairs are transplanted can develop small cysts or ingrown hairs. It usually occurs a few months after the transplant when the hair shaft starts growing and gets trapped under the skin.
  5. Importantly that the recipient sites are made with a proper sized instrument. If a large instrument is used in the recipient sites and alteration to its texture .is noted
  6. You may develop temporary loss of the surrounding hairs, termed shock loss. This occurs in about 20% of cases.
  7. Growth of the transplanted hairs are poor and it occurs for several reasons including structural damage when dissecting the hairs from the harvested strip or when placing the hairs in a traumatic fashion.
